The Rules of Volleyball

Volleyball is a sport that is played by two teams of six players. The object of the game is to hit the ball over the net and into the opponent's court in such a way that it cannot be returned. Here are the fundamental, must-know rules of a volleyball game:

1. Players

• Only 6 players on the court at a time, with each team allowed a maximum of 12 substitutions. A team must rotate each player through each of the six positions on the court.

• Each team must have a minimum of four players to start the game. If a team falls below this number, they forfeit the match.

• The players are designated specific positions on the court, with the front row consisting of the setter, opposite hitter, and middle blockers, and the back row consisting of the libero, outside hitter, and opposite hitter.

2. Court

• The volleyball court is a rectangular area measuring 18 meters by 9 meters. There must be a minimum of 2 meters of space around the court, and the ceiling should be at least 7 meters high without any obstacles.

• The court is divided into two equal sides by a net that is 1 meter wide and extends from sideline to sideline. The height of the net is 2.43 meters for men and 2.24 meters for women.

3. Scoring

• A team scores a point when the ball lands in the opponent's court, the opposing team commits a fault, or the opposing team fails to return the ball properly.

• Games are played to 25 points, with the exception of the deciding set, which is played to 15 points. A team must win by a margin of at least 2 points.

• In the event of a tie at 24-24 or 14-14 in the deciding set, play continues until one team achieves a 2-point advantage.

4. Serving

• The serve is the action of striking the ball to initiate play. The server must stand behind the end line and hit the ball over the net, aiming to land it in the opponent's court.

• The server has only one attempt to serve the ball over the net. The serve must not touch the net and must go over cleanly. If the ball hits the net and goes over, it is considered a live ball.

• A player from the serving team continues to serve until their team loses a rally. The players must rotate clockwise after each successful serve.

5. Rotation

• Each player on the serving team serves in a rotation, moving clockwise after each successful serve. The player in the right-back position is usually the first server, and the remaining players follow in order.

• The rotation allows each player to have an opportunity to serve and ensures equal distribution of player positions on the court.

These are the basic rules of volleyball. By understanding and following these rules, players can enjoy a fair and exciting game of volleyball.
